Plaque buildup on your teeth has hundreds of different kinds of bacteria, and if left untreated, the bacterial toxins released by certain bacteria and byproducts of the infection can begin to weaken healthy bone. The bone then begins to recede under the gums, leaving more area for the bacteria to do their thing. Only dentists have the instruments and training to thoroughly clean the area.

People who had their teeth cleaned twice or more in a 2-year period had a 24% lower risk of heart attack and 13% lower risk of stroke compared to those who visited the dentist less frequently, according to a 2011 study from Taiwan.
